Gift Ideas for Preschoolers

Many parents, at some point, will be challenged with finding a gift for a preschooler.  Whether it's for birthdays or holidays, finding the right gift at the right price can be difficult.  Fortunately, most children between the ages of three and five years old are easy to please.  Here are five budget friendly gift ideas your little one is sure to love!

  1. A Craft Kit: Fill a plastic jar or food storage container with colorful pipe cleaners, pom-poms, foam shapes, stickers, googley eyes and a glue stick!  And let the creativity run wild!

  2. Buried Treasure: Fill a large plastic container (with a lid) with dry rice, beans, or lentils.  Hide various items, like coins or buttons, in the rice and include utensils to "excavate" the hidden items. Funnels are also a fun addition to this gift.

  3. A Library Card: You can get your child his very own library card and slip it into a birthday or Christmas card.  Another option is to take your preschooler to the library and have him be a part of getting his own library card.  Make a big deal about picking out some books!  You can even include a special library book bag as part of the gift.  Library cards really are a gift that keeps on giving!

  4. A Puppet Making Kit: Pre-cut shapes for eyes, ears, noses, and mouths out of construction paper.  Include different colors of yarn for hair.  Don't forget several plain brown paper lunch bags and a glue stick.  Then watch your preshooler bring the puppets to life!

  5. A Goldfish: Goldfish are cheap and hardy creatures, which make them perfect for preschoolers. You can buy feeder goldfish for pennies at any store that sells fish.  House your fish in a fishbowl with rocks or marbles at the bottom.  Some fish food and clean water every couple of weeks will keep your fish healthy and your child happy!

School Begins!

For many Lodi youngsters the first day of preschool is just days away.  This can be an exciting time for children and parents alike.  However, it can also be a time of anxiety.  This may be the very first time that your child has been away from you or home for an extended period of time.  Even if your child has been away from home, he may still feel uneasy about going someplace unfamiliar.

The first day of preschool is full of new kids, strange grown-ups and different surroundings.  Of course, all of these unusual people and experiences will soon be familiar territory for your little tike.  In the mean time, there are some great tips for helping children adjust during the first days of preschool.  For more information visit A Smooth Start, a helpful article on Scholastic's website.
